Miracle baby born to mum in Covid coma

A woman gave birth to a miracle baby whilst being in a coma with Covid while pregnant. She woke up the day after her baby was born.

Miracle Baby

27 year old Marriam Ahmad was admitted to the Grange hospital in Cwmbran in January after a positive Covid test. She didn’t even bring an overnight bag with her as she did not expect to stay there for long. But her condition rapidly deteriorated.

At the time she was 29 weeks pregnant, and also having asthma, found herself in a “very scary” situation. She couldn’t hear properly, needed an Oxygen mask and felt very weak.

Her doctor started talking about a Caesarean section, initially saying that Marriam would be conscious throughout. But as the day went on, they decided she needed to be put into a coma. She was told that she “may not come back”, and that her baby might not be strong enough to survive.

Everything all happened so quickly, and Marriam was prepared to say her goodbyes. She spoke to her parents in a short call on Facetime. They didn’t know what was going on as their daughter was crying and felt lonely and scared. But she didn’t even speak to her husband Usman who was at home with their one year old son Yusuf. They were called by the doctor. It was a difficult time, as she had never left her son before, not even for one night.

The baby was born on 18 January at 20:27 BST, weighing 1.17kg (2.5lbs). Due to her unexpected arrival, the couple hadn’t even decided on a name for their second child, so she was known as ‘Baby Ahmad’ for the first few days of her life.

Despite the doctor’s warnings, Marriam awoke from the coma by midday the next day. She had no idea what had happened, but was in a lot of pain. It took time for her to recover and she wasn’t able to see her baby for the next week. Although the nurses took photos and videos to show Marriam.

The staff at the hospital were all interested in knowing how Marriam and her baby were doing, and urged that the daughter was named something special. So Marriam and Usman decided on the name Khadija, as in Islamic faith it is a very strong, independent woman. It was an apt name given how strong the baby was, despite being premature. It was a miracle there were none of the foreseen complications.

A happy and healthy baby, Khadija is now home after eight weeks in hospital. She is feeding well and now weighs in at nearly 4kg (8.8lbs). Marriam is “grateful” that both her and her baby are still alive, and has been so busy with the newborn that she hasn’t really had time to think about what happened.

The horrific and traumatic experience makes her feel even more grateful for the little things in life, and she relishes just spending time with her family.
