The future of the NHS and social care staff is at risk due to an “emergency” level of burnout. Health and Social Care committee are asking for more to be done to support our exhausted NHS and Social care staff.
The highly critical report continues to highlight issues the nursing profession is facing. Issues such as a serious shortage in nurses. Prior to the Pandemic, the Royal College of Nursing informed MPs that there were over 50,000 nursing vacancies in the UK.
This lack of staff, according to the Royal College of Psychiatrists, is the leading reason behind the burnout. The new report sees MPs say “a total overhaul of NHS workforce planning is needed”. They call for a long term solution to this continuing problem. MPs know a solution will not be found overnight but they need to be working towards reducing “excessive workloads”.
Former health secretary Jeremy Hunt is chairman of the Health and Social Care committee. He believes that the current level of workforce burnout is posing an “extraordinary risk” to the future of both services.
The backlog in appointments and operations caused by the Pandemic is overwhelming those trying to play catch up. The staff are now facing a chronic workload and “unacceptable pressure”. Mr Hunt says catching up with the backlog will simply “not be possible” if the issues are not addressed.
Not just the NHS who is struggling post pandemic
It is not just the NHS that is struggling with the Post pandemic chaos, but social care too. Skills for Care estimates a huge 7.3% of roles are still open from 2019. This accounts for approximately 112, 000 jobs.
Professor Martin Marshall is Chairman of the Royal College of GPs. He believes the report by the Health and Social Care committee highlights the “inadequate staff numbers” and “inappropriate work planning”. These inadequacies is putting Social Care in a “fragile” position.
The lack of GP’s, and other members of the healthcare team, will only crack further as they busily support communities during pandemic recovery.
