Following his absence from the public eye in recent years, comedian Peter Kay announces a return to the stage to perform two special charity shows.
Kay will host two live Q&A sessions at the O2 Apollo Manchester in order to raise funds for brain cancer patient Laura Nuttall.
The performances are scheduled to take place on Saturday 7 August, with tickets going on sale at 9am on on 30 July.
Nuttall shared Kay’s announcement via a post on her fundraising page, saying she is “so incredibly grateful” for his involvement. She “still can’t quite believe this is really happening!”.
In October 2018 during her first term studying at King’s College London, 20 year old Nuttall was diagnosed with cancer. A scan showed she had six tumours and an aggressive type of brain cancer known as glioblastoma multiforme.
Rare stage appearance
The popular comedian, hailed as one of Britain’s most celebrated contemporary comics, has largely stayed away from the limelight recently. Therefore, this charity announcement marks a rare live date for Kay.
Kay cancelled his tour and all future work projects in late 2017 due to “unforeseen family circumstances”. No further details were given at the time, as he momentarily disappeared from the public eye. A year later he returned with actress Sian Gibson for the finale of their hit BBC TV series Car Share. However, he has not appeared live since then.
Last year, the comedian was due to host a series of “dance-a-thons” at venues across the UK. But the tour never happened because of cancellation due to the Covid pandemic.
In January, Kay briefly returned to the limelight with an appearance on BBC Radio 2. He chatted to Cat Deeley about his love of music and the musical Mamma Mia.
