Ministers are apparently looking at plans for quarantine free travel from amber list countries for people who have received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock says the government are “working on” ways to allow the vaccine to “bring back” some freedoms. However, plans for England are not “clinically advised yet”, and “we’ll get there when it’s safe to do so”.
Meanwhile, International Trade Secretary Liz Truss also hinted at something similar. But she did not want to speculate on what was happening in terms of travel. She did, however, say the government was looking at what it could do to “ease up requirements where it makes sense”. The priority is still to ensure people’s safety, but the government are keen to free up the rules as much as they can.
Current situation
The current rules in England state only people arriving from countries on the green list are free from quarantine regulations. They do still need to take a Covid test though. Travellers arriving from countries on the red or amber lists must isolate for 10 days. Arrivals from the red list must stay at government approved hotels, while those from amber destinations can isolate anywhere.
Meanwhile, England remains “on track” for the removal of coronavirus restrictions on 19 July. Covid case rates are “slowing” down, and hospital admissions “not rising quickly”. The health secretary says the number of people dying from Covid in England is “very, very low”, which shows the “vaccine was working”.
Mr Hancock also warns the coming winter could prove “challenging”, but hopes the government will not need to bring back restrictions.
