Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth marks what would have been her husbands 100th birthday. She planted The Duke Of Edinburgh Rose, which was bred specifically to mark Prince Philips centenary.
Queen Elizabeth was given the rose as a gift from the Royal Horticultural Society. The newly bred rose was bred by Harkness Roses, who have been British rose breeders since 1879.
RHS president Keith Weed said the rose was made to mark Prince Philips centenary. It is also to “commemorate all the marvelous things he did”
The monarch observed as her head gardener, Philip Gardener, planted the new rose shrub bush. It is taking pride of place in the front of the castles mixed rose boarder in the East Terrace garden.
This is a particularly special place to Prince Philip, who spent a lot of time redesigning the East Terrace Garden. He also commissioned the lotus fountain which sits in the centre.
Queen Elizabeth has a gift that keeps on giving
For each of the rose sold, a donation goes to the Living Legacy Fund to help more children. Not only is the rose a gift to the Queen, but the country she loves too.
The firm donates £2.50 of every rose sold to the fund chaired by the late Duke of Edinburgh in 1956. These donations will change the lives of over a million children from varied backgrounds. In the short period since his death, the fund has already raised over half a million pounds.
The palace held discussions with Prince Philip before his death on how to mark his 100th birthday. The birthday celebrations were always going to be low key, exactly how Prince Philip wanted. Alistair Bruce says the Duke was never “much into birthdays” – even less since approaching 100.
Since his death, he world has become more aware that the hard work Prince Philip did. He was so much more than simply the Queens consort. One of the Duke of Edinburgh’s great passions was the Duke of Edinburgh awards.
In order to keep the momentum of raising funds going, they are launching the biggest ever campaign. They are asking everyone, young and old, to take on the Do it 4 Youth challenge.
The Do it 4 youth challenge asks people to take part in challenges. Each challenge is different. The Hands Up challenge asks people to help in their communities. Free Up asks people to give up something, such as coffee or chocolate. Skill Up involves learning a new skill whilst Get Up is a physical challenge.
They are asking everyone in the UK to take part in a four week challenge, similar to those who participate in the Duke of Edinburgh award.
