Met Police officer PC Wayne Couzens admits to the kidnapping and rape of Sarah Everard.
33 year old Sarah Everard disappeared in south London on 3 March, while walking in Clapham back to her home in Brixton. She was last seen on a doorbell camera, walking alone towards Tulse Hill.
Marketing executive Ms Everard was reported missing the following day on 4 March by her boyfriend. Her body was discovered a week later on 10 March, hidden in an area of woodland near Ashford, Kent. The body was found inside a builder’s bag, and was identified using dental records.
48 year old PC Couzens, of Deal, appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from Belmarsh prison. He pleaded guilty to both the kidnap and rape of Ms Everard. He also accepted responsibility for her death, but no plea was entered on the charge of murder. Details of Ms Everard’s post-mortem are yet to be revealed regarding the cause of death. The court await medical reports, but an inquest into Ms Everard’s death is likely to open later this week.
“Yes, sir”
PC Couzens, an armed officer with the Met’s Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, was charged last Friday.
He pleaded guilty to the charge of kidnapping “unlawfully and by force or fraud”, and guilty to a second charge of rape. Both charges were replied to with “yes, sir”.
Members of Ms Everard’s family were also at the court hearing via video link.
The defendant remains in custody, as no application was filed for bail. He is due to appear at the Old Bailey again for a second plea hearing and trial preparation on 9 July. He will face trial on 25 October.
