Jimmy Francis and Suzie Small chose to marry in Southampton Children’s hospital. Why? Their two year old son Romeo is currently unable to leave the hospital while he awaits a heart transplant.
Jimmy and Suzie were originally planning to marry in Basingstoke. However, the couple knew that they could not have go married without their son there, it simply would not be right. Romeo has been in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of Southampton Children’s Hospital while he waits for a transplant.
At just 10 months old, Romeo suffered cardiac arrest. It was discovered that is suffering from a very rare condition, restrictive cardiomyopathy. He has already undergone massive heart surgery and now has to remain in the hospital awaiting for a transplant.
Southampton Children’s Hospital made into the ideal wedding venue
Far from the clinical feel of a hospital ward, Jimmy and Suzie can not thank nurses enough for arranging the wedding and taking the stress away. Hospital Chaplin Sue Pitkin arranged for a special license to be approved by the Archbishop of Canterbury’s office for the wedding to go ahead. A task she was happy to do for the couple.
“On the day, everyone in PICU, staff and the friends of the PICU charity, pulled out all the stops to make the chapel look beautiful and to enable Romeo to enjoy his parents wedding day”
Romeo’s parents keep an online blog, documenting his story and making people aware about the importance of organ donation.
