Under the government’s roadmap, full capacity indoor events will not return in England until at least 21 June. However, tickets are still on sale for shows that can’t happen as they take place before this date.
In February, the government announced their four step roadmap out of lockdown. The full re-opening of all venues and events is in the final stage, meaning it would not happen before 21 June. The intention is for this to be when all restrictions on social contact are removed.
Tickets are still being sold for arena shows by a number of stars, including Haim, Alicia Keys and Mrs Brown’s Boys. This is despite the fact they can’t go ahead as planned due to the Covid restrictions in place.
Alicia Keys is scheduled to perform in various locations across England from 6-10 June, dates that have already been rescheduled before. A spokeswoman confirmed this tour won’t happen in June. The Mrs Brown’s Boys comedy tour is scheduled to start in England on 7 June. A spokeswoman said new plans were likely to be announced next week. Meanwhile, US trio Haim are scheduled to play venues in England from 15 June.
A waiting game
The roadmap lays out that from 17 May events will be allowed with smaller, socially distanced crowds. But such shows as the aforementioned are not expected to go ahead with less people.
One fan, who paid £95 for two tickets to see Haim at the O2 Arena, says she can still see tickets being sold for dates they know aren’t going to happen. Her ticket app still shows the tickets as being valid for 18 June, with no indication it won’t happen.
She feels frustrated as she is unable to make clear plans for the day. She does not expect the concert to go ahead on the date, but does not want to make other plans, just in case. If things do go ahead then she also needs to plan travel and accommodation, which she doesn’t want to do at the last minute.
Another major problem in these situations is that refunds are only given if shows are officially rescheduled or cancelled. People who have already bought tickets for shows on certain dates should be able to get a refund. The roadmap gives the industry clarity on what can happen and when. It is time for them to do the responsible thing, there is no reason for concerts organisers to hold on to people’s money.
These events should be taken off sale immediately, and consumers advised not to buy tickets until new dates are confirmed.
