British athlete Kadeena Cox wins cycling gold at the Tokyo Paralympics, retaining her C4-5 500m time trial title and setting a new world record.
The 30 year old previously won gold in cycling and athletics events at the Rio Games in 2016.
In order to win Britain’s seventh gold, she needed to beat Canadian world champion Kate O’Brien’s time of 35.830 seconds. With a fantastic time of 34.812secs she surpassed the old record by 0.411secs.
Talking about the moment afterwards, she says, “I tried not to cry on the podium, I tried to enjoy” it. She describes it as an “overwhelming” experience that did not really sink in until she got up on that podium.
Other action from the Games
Earlier in the day, Britain’s Jaco Van Gass also celebrated success, claiming his second medal of the Games with bronze in the C1-3 1000m time trial. He also set a new world record in his C3 category, but unfortunately for him, it was not enough to win.
Also on day three of the Games, Maria Lyle won bronze in the opening of the athletics tournament. She finished third in the T35 100m as China’s Xia Zhou set a new world record.
Newcomer Olivia Broome also achieved bronze in her powerlifting debut, with a best lift of 107kg in the -50kg event. Meanwhile, her team-mate Ali Jawad finished in sixth place in the men’s -59kg event. His training was impacted by Covid and Crohn’s disease, a condition he deals with every day.
Elsewhere, in the swimming heats, Britain’s Reece Dunn and Jordan Catchpole qualified as the two fastest in the S14 200m freestyle final. While defending champion Bethany Firth, London 2012 winner Jessica-Jane Applegate and Loise Fiddes are in the women’s final. Following battles with mental health since the Rio Games, Hannah Russell defends her S12 100m backstroke title.
On the first day of the rowing event, GB’s Lauren Rowles and Laurence Whiteley set a new Paralympic best to reach the PR2 mixed double sculls final on Sunday. Also in the rowing finals is the PR3 mixed coxed four.
