The government will raise crowd capacity at Wembley Stadium to 75%. This means over 60,000 fans can now attend the Euro 2020 semi-finals and final games.
Meanwhile, there is speculation the matches could move from London to Budapest if VIPs are not exempt from England’s strict quarantine rules.
The increase in spectators means the largest crowds at a sporting event in the UK for more than 15 months. Despite the UK government postponing the lift of all Covid restrictions until 19 July, extra crowd capacity is allowed at those specific matches. This is because the games at Wembley, along with other sporting events, are part of an Events Research Programme.
Hope for the future
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin is pleased at the move. He says it’s great so many fans are able to watch the final three games of Euro 2020 at Wembley. The tournament is seen as a beacon of hope, reassuring people of return to a more normal way of life. The latest decision is a “further step along that road”, Ceferin adds.
Ceferin is grateful to the prime minister and UK government for working hard to finalise the arrangements. He believes it will help make the final stages of the football tournament “a great success in Wembley”.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden reiterates that the safety of the public remains top priority as we continue to progress on our roadmap out of lockdown. He says the government have worked closely with Uefa and the Football Association. Together they are ensuring rigorous and tight measures are in place while enabling more supporters to see the action live.
“The finals promise to be an unforgettable moment in our national recovery from the pandemic”. They are a positive step forward for the future, and a good sign of what is to come.
