According to recruitment firm Reed, the number of jobs advertising working from home has risen compared to before the Covid pandemic.
The number of Reed’s job vacancies advertising remote working has risen to 5% this year from only 1% before the pandemic.
During the coronavirus pandemic many office workers shifted to flexible or home working. Applications for jobs with remote working surged. The number of adverts with flexible working peaked, with adverts using words like “dynamic” or “hybrid” working also increasing.
Since the beginning of the year, the percentage of jobs advertising hybrid working fell from 9.2% to 5.6%. This could signify that not all employers have adopted flexible working on a permanent basis. On the other hand, it could mean that this type of working is now more widely accepted so companies don’t make a big thing about advertising it.
As lockdown restrictions ease, Reed also recently see lots of adverts for roles where people need to work “in person”. This is mainly in industries such as retail and transport, as well as health and medicine sectors.
A taste for home working
The pandemic forced people into working from home, giving them a taste for it. It opened them up to the benefits on their lives. As a result, people are now more likely to apply for a job if it is advertised as remote.
The pandemic has changed the way people work and how companies operate. They are used to it now, and many may not want to return to the office.
The push for home working largely comes from younger people. But some fear that physical presence in the office and working together with others has benefits to people’s careers. Working from home means they miss out on certain experiences. This is a belief also held by Chancellor Rishi Sunak who doesn’t think he would have done so well in his career if he had started his work life virtually.
Emerging from the pandemic
As the UK emerges from the pandemic, the pros and cons of home working and returning to the office is a hot topic of debate.
Workers are attracted to jobs with flexible working options. Working from home gives people more flexibility on the location of where they can work. If the perfect job is miles away, they do not have to upend their entire life to relocate nearby. The office environment is full of distractions, while at home you can create a quiet space to work.
Meanwhile, others prefer being surrounded by others, and need it for better communication.
The rise in job adverts for remote working shows how working from home is here to stay, and jobseekers now expect flexible working as the norm. If employers want to attract and keep talent, they need to get on board, or they risk losing out on the best candidates for jobs.
